Tim’s path to becoming a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is a testament to how life’s twists and turns can lead us to unexpected and rewarding destinations. What began as a simple career plan evolved into a fulfilling journey, enriched by personal connections and a passion for flexibility in his professional life.
A Mother’s Influence
Tim’s journey into the world of anesthesia started with his mother, who worked with the anesthesia group of Albany. Her dedication and the impact she made in the field inspired Tim to set his sights on becoming a CRNA. Although his initial plan was to become a nurse, his mother’s encouragement was pivotal in guiding him toward CRNA school. Her support not only steered him towards a new career path but also laid the groundwork for Tim’s future.
Meeting the Love of His Life
Tim’s educational journey took him to Albany Medical College in 2019, where he pursued his CRNA degree. It was at Albany Medical that Tim’s life took another exciting turn. He met his future mother-in-law, who happened to be one of his nursing school teachers. A chance shadowing session with her led to Tim meeting his future wife. Despite growing up in the same town, Tim and his future wife only met as adults, thanks to this fortuitous connection.
Discovering Locums and Embracing Flexibility
Tim’s interest in locums was sparked by Facebook groups for CRNAs. Encouraged by friends, he decided to explore this alternative to traditional CRNA roles. He began working locums in January of this year and will transition to full-time locums in October. The shift has been transformative for him, offering a new level of autonomy and flexibility.
“The autonomy I have as a provider is huge,” Tim says. He loves the flexibility that locums work provides—three 12-hour shifts per week and two days off. “I love being able to work when I can, and I love being able to take call,” he adds. The control over his schedule and the ability to spend quality time with his family have been some of the most rewarding aspects of his new role.
Looking to the Future
Tim is optimistic about the future of locums in anesthesia. He believes there will be a continued high demand due to the growing elderly population and a significant gap in available providers. “The need is so high for anesthesia providers, especially for locums,” he explains. The shortage of new graduates entering the field further exacerbates this need, making locums an increasingly crucial component of the healthcare system.

Tim’s experience working with VeloSource has been notably positive. He describes the process as “very smooth” and appreciates how quickly things moved forward. One of the benefits he values is the flexibility to give VeloSource his extra days when he’s not working at his full-time job. This arrangement allows him to maximize his work opportunities while maintaining a balanced schedule.
Tim’s story is an inspiring example of how personal connections and professional flexibility can shape a rewarding career. From the influence of his mother to the serendipitous meeting with his future wife, every step has contributed to his success as a CRNA. As he continues to embrace the locums lifestyle, Tim’s journey underscores the importance of adaptability and the fulfillment that comes from pursuing a path that aligns with both personal and professional goals.
