The demands of a medical career can often conflict with starting a family. However, one young mother has made it work and excelled as a CRNA, providing locum tenens coverage while her husband accepted a job transfer to a new community.
"It was always going to be a temporary thing. I would have never branched out, but because we would be there temporarily, I thought it would make sense to do small contract jobs. That's how I got started," says Y.A.
The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) found that locum tenens met the family's transition needs. The family took an extension on the assignment before returning home and having the first child.
"It was really nice to have the flexibility of working locums and to choose my schedule," she adds.
Practicing locum tenens also provided a high level of timely compensation for the young family.
"It was a great experience in terms of a variety of cases. I've been able to practice in different models, including independent settings where no anesthesiologist was involved," says Y.A.
She also spoke about the additional advantages of practicing locum tenens, such as how her experience in a rural community made her confident in handling more responsibilities as a CRNA working independently.
Conversely, she took an assignment in Seattle with a completely different model where she had a team of other CRNAs and one anesthesiologist.
"It made me flexible because I can blend in with various settings. However their model works, I can adapt," says Y.A.
She also sees the benefits of locum tenens in providing steady, continued care to patients and revenue to the facility.
"Locum providers are experienced enough and have the background to fill in, allowing the community to get the procedures they need from the hospital who sees the monetary benefit to keeping things running," she adds.
This contributes positively to the disposition of the overall staff, ultimately making them more appreciative and thankful for much-needed extra help. The team of providers can better manage workload, lessen burnout, and allow for their own improved work/life balance in a healthcare system currently experiencing a shortage of providers.
Y.A. also echoed the sentiments of our other providers interviewed recently about working with VeloSource, an agency that focuses on the operation, logistics, communications, and customer service that enables them to be successful in the market. In addition, sees a continuation of the upward trend in utilizing locum tenens as the primary solution to the staffing challenges facing our healthcare system.
