Navigating the Locum World: Flexibility, Growth, and Personal Fulfillment

In 2020, Dr. Sharma embarked on a new chapter in his medical career by diving into locum tenens work. His goal was straightforward: to find more flexibility and explore different healthcare systems while making a positive impact.

Over the past five years, this journey has offered him invaluable experiences and opportunities, particularly over the last two years with his current organization. Here’s a deep dive into why locum tenens has been such a rewarding path and how working with this team has been a standout experience for Dr. Sharma.

The Allure of Flexibility

The primary reason Dr. Sharma chose locum tenens was the flexibility it offered. “After spending time in traditional roles, I wanted to break free from the constraints of a fixed schedule and embrace a more adaptable lifestyle,” he explains. Locum tenens work allows him to choose when and where he works, which has been a game-changer for balancing his professional and personal life.

Initially, his locum assignments involved frequent changes—he would transition to a new location or team every few months. However, his experience with the current organization has been markedly different. “The flexibility and positive relationships I’ve built here have encouraged me to continue working with them, rather than constantly seeking new opportunities,” Dr. Sharma notes.

Building Strong Relationships

One of the most gratifying aspects of Dr. Sharma’s work has been the relationships he’s developed with both VeloSource and the hospital. “The VeloSource team is incredibly responsive and attentive to my needs, always ensuring that my requests and requirements are met promptly,” he says. This level of support has been crucial in creating a work environment where he feels valued and understood.

In Pennsylvania, where he has spent a significant amount of time, the hospital team has been exceptional. “The flexibility extends beyond scheduling; it includes a genuine effort to make me feel part of the community,” Dr. Sharma remarks. Beyond this, his team has gone out of their way to make him feel welcome. “Invitations to their homes for dinner and personal interactions have solidified my sense of belonging and integration into their team,” he adds.

Adapting and Growing in Neonatology

Dr. Sharma’s background is in pediatrics, a field he has been passionate about since his medical school days in India. After completing his pediatric residency in India and practicing as a pediatrician for two years, he moved to the U.S. to further his expertise. In New York, he completed another pediatric residency and decided to delve into neonatology, a specialty that offers unique challenges and rewards.

“Neonatology has been particularly fulfilling because it allows me to witness the immediate impact of my work,” Dr. Sharma explains. Observing premature infants grow and thrive over a matter of weeks is incredibly satisfying. “The progress I see in these babies—and the gratitude from their families—makes every challenge worthwhile,” he adds. It’s heartwarming for him to reconnect with these families during follow-ups or reunions, where they remember the care provided and the difference it made in their lives.

A Journey of Personal and Professional Growth

Locums has been a journey of continuous learning and adaptation for Dr. Sharma. “Initially, stepping into new environments and adapting to different EMR systems, staff dynamics, and hospital protocols was challenging,” he admits. However, these experiences have been instrumental in building his confidence. “The more I adapt, the more I realize that each new assignment is an opportunity to grow and overcome my own anxieties,” he says.

Traveling across the U.S. has also allowed him to explore diverse locations and meet new people. “From North Dakota to Phoenix, and Pennsylvania to Missouri, each place has contributed to my personal and professional development,” Dr. Sharma notes. He has become adept at navigating various healthcare systems and has developed a network of colleagues and friends across the country.

The Financial and Lifestyle Benefits

The financial aspect of locum work has been another significant advantage for Dr. Sharma. “Working on a 1099 basis offers more flexibility in retirement planning compared to traditional W2 employment,” he explains. This financial freedom allows him to plan for retirement while enjoying the flexibility to work where and when he chooses. “The ability to take control of my schedule and work environment has been liberating,” he adds.

The Future of Locum Tenens

Looking ahead, Dr. Sharma believes the demand for locum tenens professionals is likely to remain strong. “As younger generations often gravitate towards larger cities, mid-sized and smaller cities will continue to need locum providers,” he observes. This presents ongoing opportunities for locum agencies to thrive and for professionals like him to find fulfilling work.

Dr. Sharma’s journey with locum tenens has been a rewarding one, marked by flexibility, personal growth, and meaningful connections. “Working with my current organization has been particularly positive, thanks to the supportive team and the opportunity to work in diverse environments,” he says. The ability to make a tangible impact while exploring new places and continuously learning has made this career path both fulfilling and exciting. He looks forward to continuing this journey and embracing the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
