VeloSource's President, Jeff Schaal and CEO, Patrick Donovan, were among the 8 industry leaders chosen to be interviewed by Locumpedia for this week's Special Report.

On the heels of Staffing Industry Analysts (SIA) forecast bump from 5-6% expected growth of the locum tenens industry in 2025, comes Locumpedia's annual Locum Tenens Industry Outlook Survey and the opportunity to provide further insight on key aspects top-of-mind with healthcare leaders.

In response to SIA's forecast, Schaal and Donovan are slightly more bullish, expecting up to 10% growth this year for the locum tenens industry.

“Hospitals have adapted locums as a part of their staffing models and budgets. They’re too integrated in the industry to significantly pull back," said Schaal.

Locum leaders attribute the continuing growth to an ever-increasing demand for providers as the baby-boomer generation retires, physicians battle burnout, and the doctor shortage grows in rural areas and small towns across the U.S.

The steady need for surgery and anesthesia providers was something they all agreed upon when it came to specialty drivers of the temporary physician market. “Surgery and anesthesia are key revenue generators. Pricing may settle, but demand will stay strong," continued Schaal.

What are some potential concerns on the horizon for the industry? Regulatory changes topped the list, if at some point the independent contractor model is eliminated. The locum tenens industry relies on the 1099 workforce status. VMS and MSP models were also discussed among the group as they considered what factors could reshape the locums industry. “With new players in the space and potential consolidation, I could see the next few years providing some industry disruption as companies race to get a major foothold in the VMS space, more so now than before," ended Schaal.
